A new project is going on at Rings Road this winter, involving more than a dozen church icons, Byzantine designs, and large scale work in the plans.
A local Greek orthodox church commissioned Effie Mandalos, Rings Road director and artist, with the help from student, Haoyi Li, to restore more than a dozen religious icon paintings from the late 70’s. The work has been physically taxing, but very rewarding and a valuable learning experience, especially given the tradition nature of the approach taken by the artist-apprentice duo.
After a month of work, the centre piece of the church’s dome, 11 panels and 4 small icons have been successfully cleaned, touched up and varnished to give them a new life. Still in the waiting list is a life-sized altar centrepiece panel waiting to be restored and the original work to be completed in the dome and altar.
